The story about Yukino's parents past continues as her father and mother move from being in middle school to being in high school together two years later.  Still unable to express their feelings until after his grandfather passes away.  Hiroyuki is at a loss following the death of his only family, especially because of the loss of being able to repay the kindness and care that he was given.  On the cusp of adulthood, Hiroyuki has planned to do everything in his power to make sure the gentle man who raised him could live in the comfort he deserved.  Unfortunately, he was unable to achieve the dream in time.  In comfort for his pain Miyako expresses her desire to be there for him in the way that he wanted to be there for his grandfather.  They were married after she graduated high school, much to her fathers horror.

When Arima finally returns from his responsibility as a member of the kendo club they are able to go on a date.  Arima has matured while away and Miyazawa is uncomfortable with her renewed love for him.  She struggles with telling him her feelings and awkwardly avoids contact on their date.  Frustrated he confronts her about her behavior, afraid she has actually started to dislike him.  She attempts to run away but he chases her and forces her to come clean.  For the first time they openly confirm their love for one another.

Arima and his parents attend a family gathering, which tend to be emotionally draining on him.  Because of his real father's theft and disappearance everyone else in the family views Souichiro as a bad apple from a rotten tree.  Even after his step father scolds his aunt about her blatant hatred for him, Arima struggles to find his worth.  That is until Miyazawa shows up delivering notes for summer homework.  He realizes how much she helps keep him from his despair.  He confesses to her that he wants to make love to her.  While it causes momentary awkwardness it doesn't stop them from enjoying the last of summer break.

Nearing the end of break a thunderstorm brings them alone to Arima's house where there passions take over and the reach a new level on intimacy.  Miyazawa revels in the deeper connection with Arima but that night, when she is away from him in her own bed, he has a nightmare about his cursed existence.  An inner him reminds him that he can never truly be happy.
