Ao Haru Ride

Ao Haru Ride (アオハライド) also known as Aoharido, is a 12 episode shojo romance based on the manga of the same name by Sakisaka Io.  It originally aired in Japan during the Summer of 2014.

Yoshioka Futaba tried to reinvent herself when she got to high school.  Naturally cute, she didn’t want to attract unwarranted scorn from the other girls.  She decided to present herself as frumpy and easy going, succeeding in her plan.  This was somewhat in response to the boy she fell in love with in middle school, Tanaka Kou, moving away suddenly.  When Kou shows up again he challenges her change.  She begins to question her choices, his sudden appearance and his drastically different personality.  She struggles to find her true self and if she can love the man the boy she once loved is becoming.

This series was a bit different than I expected.  It focused quite a bit on the characters questioning their personalities and how they deal with the way others perceive them.  The writing wasn't bad, but some parts seemed to be unnecessary.  The artwork is typical shojo; big eyes, slender frames and long legs.  Very CLAMP like in that regard.  This was truly a shojo story and it wasn't horrible either, just probably not something an approaching middle aged man would want to be caught watching.

I didn't hate it, and out of the shojo series that I have watched this year it’s probably the best.  It had the same feel as Sukitte ii na yo.  Honestly though, the rivalry over the returning love interest felt strained and pointless.  The scavenger hunt episode could have been skipped as well.  Both didn’t add as much to the stories progression as they could have and what they did add seemed clumsy.

The series was simulcast on Crunchyroll.  There is no word on a disc release in North America but I wouldn’t count it out.  The manga is not currently available in North America.
