Mokuyobi Post - Macross Plus

Macross Plus is the 4 part OAV commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the original Macross TV series.  The OAV's were released in Japan in 1994.

30 years after the original SDF Macross accidentally launched to the far end of the Solar System and fought the war against the Zentradi, humanity has begun expanding to the stars.  The U.N. forces are secretly testing new Veritech fighters, one a traditional machine, the other controlled with thought.   The tests are being conducted on the colony planet Eden by two pilots who grew up there.  Isamu Dyson is a loose cannon hotshot who was forced into the test due to insubordination.  Guld Goa Bowman is half Zentradi and pilots the one controlled by thought.  Once friends as kids, they are heated rivals as adults.  The AI pop idol Sharon Apple is going to be performing a concert on Eden leading up to the commemoration ceremony for the end of the Zentradi war on Earth.  Sharons agent/controller is Isamu and Gulds childhood friend Myung Lone.  An incident involving Myung is what caused all 3 to grow apart.  With all of them in the same place dormant feelings surge to the surface and threaten the test project.  When Sharons program starts to be effected byMyungs mental stress the AI begins to enact a plan that will make Isamu hers for ever.

This is one of the only Macross titles to make it to America without trouble relating to Harmony Golds strangle hold on the franchise.  It was well recieved and has been a classic in America and Japan since its release.  In addition to the 4 part OAV, it wad recut into a full length movie with some minor changes.  Both versions are excellent and highly recommended.  The animation was cutting edge at the time, merging cell animation and CGU rather well.  The plot is well detailed and the characters are memorable and well developed.  As with most Macross since this one, much of the music was done by Yoko Kanno and plays a central role in the story.  I have always really enjoyed this story and have watched it countless times.  On a side note, it's interesting to see the development and advancement in the virtual idol world in Japan, particularly with vocaloids.

The OAV's and DVD are readily available in both dub and subtitled format in North America.

Mokuyobi Post - Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals is a 4 part OAV based on the world of FFV.  It was originally released in Japan in 1994.

200 years after the hero's of the game Final Fantasy V save the 4 elemental crystals from ExDeath another villain shows up to threaten the worlds existence.  A new set of unlikely hero's must heed the call to save their world and defeat the new evil.

This anime really felt less like Final Fantasy and more like a senseless fantasy comedy series.  It was lack luster in plot, character design and over all feeling.  Apparently others must feel the same way as the license for the series has expired and it was never released on DVD in North America.  If you really want to watch something of this nature watch El Hazard instead, you will have a better time.

Spring shows ranking at the halfway mark

It’s the halfway point of the spring season, so I thought; why not rank the new shows I’m watching.  Below is their order from greatest to least.

#1. Mushi-shi (蟲師 章)
No surprise here, I loved the original and the continuation of this excellent series does not disappoint.  Right now my two biggest problems are; which episode is my favorite and what will I do while the series takes the summer off?!

#2. Knights of Sidonia (シドニアの騎士)
This is a fun and interesting space mech opera.  We still have yet to get into the meat of the story and it’s already been a really fun ride.  I keep trying to convince people to stop watching Attack on Titan and watch this instead…but no one ever listens to me.

#3. World Fool News (ワールド フール ニュース)

This one popped up out of nowhere on Crunchyroll and perked my interest.  Oddly drawn but wryly written gag series that apparently is getting limited broadcast time in Japan.  If you have a good handle on Japanese gag humor you can take a lot out of this one.  Best gag so far, the baby who runs a construction company.

#4. The Kawai Complex (僕らはみんな河合荘)
I really, really see this as a modernization of Maison Ikkoku and have been enjoying its offbeat humor and glossy animation.  The last episode was a bit of a downer but I hope to see the series rolling strong and perhaps betting an overall plot to it besides ‘dude wanting to hook up with girl’.  There are teasers in the OP that could make this series really interesting.

#5. Mekaku City Actors (メカクシティアクターズ)
With researching its vocaloid origins and finally starting to see more of the story after a handful of episodes, this series is becoming interesting.  The animation though is kind of annoying, but I won’t let that deter me from this unique series.

#6. One Week Friends (一週間フレンズ)
This series is nice but is really dry…almost too dry…I want to like it more, but it’s starting to really become boring.  Maybe it’s better off as a manga, time will tell.

#7. Soul Eater Not! (ソウルイーターノット!)
This spin off of the excellent original is faring better than I expected but still has to deal with moe trappings.  My reception to it is tepid currently and unless the series kicks into gear and starts to go somewhere I may drop it.

#8. The World is Still Beautiful (それでも世界は美しい)
If only she would stop FUCKING singing every single episode!!!  I would like this series quite a bit better.  It’s fun and brainlessly enjoyable otherwise.  No new territory, hell the art looks like it came straight out of 1997.  But enjoyable, accept for that same damn song being sung, almost each and every time!!!!!  Knock it off already; we get it…push the single.  Geez.

#9. M3 (M3 -ソノ黒キ鋼)
I have only watched the first episode of this supernatural series and it seems mildly interesting, need to really catch up before I can have a better feel for it, but so far, not so bad.

#10. Black Bullet  (ブラック・ブレット)
If it wasn’t for all of the loli characters I would probably like this series more.  But they just so happen to be part of the central plot so it get annoying.  There are also shonen battle series trappings as well…which are also annoying.

#11. Captain Earth (キャプテン・アース)
For all of its faults, and it has a shit ton of them, I keep wanting to watch more to find out what the subterfuge is all about in the story.  The animation is semi garbage.  The mech design is shitty and unoriginal.  The recycled mech formation sequences are incredibly trite.  The fact the enemy is after humanities libido is one of the dumbest plot devices I have ever seen!  I want to know what’s up with all the organizations involved and what the hell these enemy beings really are.  I honestly could care less for the success or failure of the good guys.  Oh, and if it wasn’t bad enough, they had to toss in a cute iconic animal ala Magical Knights Rayearth to make it even more ‘fan’ appealing.

#12. Brynhilder in the Darkness (極黒のブリュンヒルデ)
While the story is interesting, almost all of the characters are so goddamn annoying., moe and loli…fuck!!  Good thing there is some gratuitous violence, not like Elfen Laid, but enough to keep me watching with all of its faults.  I mean, the story is interesting to a degree, but they keep pulling these worn out plot devices out of their ass to keep the story rolling.

A Milestone of Sorts

Now marks completely reviewing over 200 anime/manga titles on this site.  This site was first fired up September 1st, 2008 as a place to migrate from my original posting site on MySpace.  I made the move to ensure a larger audience reach and to allow for more control over the layout.  So far I haven't been too disappointed.  In the beginning I began migrating many of the reviews from MySpace, but not all of them.  I have said plenty about many series during the life of this blog, more than 200, but I figured it would be significant to only tally the complete reviews, as anyone can just say a few words about something they watched briefly.  These reviews represent me consuming a particular series in it's entirety then documenting my thoughts on said series...for nothing more than self entertainment.

I guess I like hearing myself talk!  Anyways, in late 2009 I took a 4 year hiatus due to increasing real life responsibilities and a growing disdain for the trends in popular anime.  On top of that a trip I made to Japan in 2009 burned me out mentally with pretty much everything related to Japan so I gave it a rest for a while.  Almost 4 years later I decided to fire it up and get back into the groove as I started to get back into anime, catching up on the series' I missed in the 4 year absence.  I am close to being caught up, so the reviews will simmer down a bit as I am left to the beck and call of whats current.

Earlier in the year I introduced my take on the Throwback Thursday craze with the Mokuyobi Posts, mokuyobi (木曜日)being the Japanese word for Thursday.  Using these posts to do quick reviews of older anime.  I have a number still in the wings to drop but may run out before long, so any suggestions for old ass series' you want me to review...fire away, there is a good chance I have watched it!

As may be apparent, I have been reading/reviewing a good deal more manga lately.  This trend may continue at its current pace, but when I get involved in a long running story it's difficult to fly through the reviews.  (Currently I'm a third of the way through Bakuman)  Yet, Japan keeps churning out new anime after new anime and they keep becoming readily available to me, so the posts will continue for the foreseeable future!  From time to time I will do more posts on my opinions and understandings of the things in reality that drive or come from the anime/manga world.  I like understanding why things happen in these series and paying attention to what they spawn in the real world.  You won't see me reporting from con's though, sorry.  I don't frequent them and have no desire to change that just to talk about what I saw and did, there is plenty of that that exists already.

What initially started as a way to fill a void in keeping up with what was coming out in anime 10 years ago, following the closing of a friends store, has developed into a greater depth and understanding of the anime industry and it's driving forces.  It's fun being able to keep my close friends up to date on whats coming out and what I liked.  It's also fun spreading my special blend of insanity to other people I have never met, for whatever they take from it.

The name, Otaku Network, initially came for an idea to build a website listing, detailing and cross referencing all of the anime that existed.  A resource that would help people find titles similar to ones they loved, to expand their fandom.  After setting it up off-line I discovered that someone had done almost the same thing earlier, Anime News Network.  I quickly scrapped the idea and a number of months later reused the name as the title for the original review posts on MySpace.  Since it's discovery ANN has been an amazing resource for me and has greatly increased my knowledge of the industry.  I no longer have to troll Japanese TV station websites to find out what series were running and what was in the wings.  Now, the well connected people at ANN do that, and I just leech off of their hard work!  If would be fun to work for them and I considered applying in the past when they had open positions, but regionally it is not feasible for me.  So to the fine people who run that website, I am deeply grateful for their hard work, dedication and resource.

So thanks for the interest, however fleeting it may be.  And keep peeled for more reviews, critiques, outright hatreds and perhaps some education!

Kokoro Connect

Kokoro Connect is a slice of life psychological drama based on the light novels of the same name.  There is also a manga adaptation of both the novel series and the anime.  The anime originally aired in Japan during the summer off season in 2012 and ran for 13 episodes.

The story follows 5 high school students who end up forming a club because they don't fit into or refuse to join any other activities.  Their new found friendship and camaraderie is put to the test when a mysterious force begins playing games with them.

While the series can be said to be from the viewpoint of Taichi Yaegashi, I would argue that its really about another of the five characters, but this won't be apparent until the very end of the series.  There are essentially 3 arcs after the first episode.  Each arc deals with a different challenge the group has to face.  In the beginning, most notably, this is a light hearted comedic romance.  But as the series progresses more somber tones take over, with the final arc being full of brooding and moodiness.  This was, in general, a quick and entertaining series.  My biggest complaint is with the 2nd arc, it was rather boring and seemed to take to long.  I enjoyed the first arc the best, it was the most entertaining.  The final arc really clamped down on the characters personality traits and the drivers for their actions.  The ending made the entire series fall into a different light than up to that point.  Well, perhaps light is the wrong way of saying it, it brings up a different set of conclusions and ideas about the entire series and the events that transpired.  In the end though this is a coming of age story with a dark side, driven by paranormal activity.  It reminded me of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, in that the focus of the story was character introspection.  Unlike Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, it wasn't very moe...thankfully.  There was also very little in the way of fan service and generally seemed to be a well put together series.  The animation wasn't half bad, the voice acting was pretty well done and most of the writing was interesting.  There is however one problem...upon researching some of the info for this post I discovered that 4 more episodes were released in the winter of 2012...I will update this post after I have tracked down and watched those episodes.

It would be cool to see a movie made that follows up, perhaps 10 years in the future, the group having somewhat split off, as happens when you become adults, and they are drawn together again by another trial.

All in all, good series and worth the time.  It's like a blend of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsu, Kimi ga Nozmu Eien and in some respect,  Bokurano.  The original 13 episodes are available via streaming on Crunchyroll and on DVD and Blu-Ray in North America.  It does not seem that the final 4 episodes are available in North America though...

Moon Rabbit

Tsuki Usagi is a 1-shot manga by Kuji Shinnosuke.  It follows up an earlier 1-shot, Astro and was published in Japan in 2013.

A number of years after the events of Astro the colony on the Moon has developed as intended.  In order to fund the colony and increase public awareness of the mission space tourists are encouraged to take trips to the colony.  NAXA (the space agency in the story) captured a terrorist as he tried to board a ship to the moon.  Interrogating him they discover a plot to detonate suicide bombs in the colony.  They quickly contact the 3 astronauts from the original manga to try and stop the terrorist from succeeding.

OK, while the characters still come with unnecessary facial flare, this 1-shot was quite a bit better than the original one.  It seems the manga-ka has gotten into a better grove with the writing and it was surprisingly good.   The character designs at times do suffer a bit from oddities, but the backgrounds and technical designs are highly detailed and well done.  The story also sets its self up for more.  So, with a bust on the original part, I am hoping to see more of this world in the future.

As with Astro, don't expect to EVER see Moon Rabbit commercially in North America.

I'm throwing in the towel on Nisekoi

Nisekoi is a harem comedy which began airing in Japan in January of 2014.  The series is based on the manga of the same name by Naoshi Komi.

Raku Ichijo is the only son of a prominent yakuza leader who wants to distance himself from his family’s underworld habits.  The most important thing to him is reconnecting with a mysterious girl from his childhood who he shares a forgotten secret with.  The only thing he has to prove who the girl is, is her key to a locket he wears around his neck.  Something is inside of the locket but he can’t remember what it is.  He secretly hopes the girl from his past is a classmate, Kosaki Onodera.  When a rambunctious foreign transfer student, Chitoge Kirisaki, shows up his life gets a bit more complicated.  Chitoge is the daughter of a mafia boss and the entire gang has just moved to town.  The gang and the yakuza start shooting it out and the heads of both groups devise a plan to quell the violence.  The plan is to say that Raku and Chitoge are dating and will be married, merging both criminal factions.  The problem is, they hate each others’ guts, but decide to go with the plan to save everyone from trouble.  To Raku’s horror, word of the relationship reaches school and they have to pretend to be in love in front of the girl of his dreams.  Then he discovers that Chitoge and Kosaki both have memories of a boy in their youth who made a promise to them, of which they can’t remember, and both retain a key.  One of them could be Raku’s promise girl but he can’t easily find that answer out.  Things become even more complicated when a girl from a picture of the time around the promise shows up, Marika Tachibana, who also has a key.  At the time of the picture Raku’s father had promised Marika to his son in exchange for protection from her dad, who is the chief of police.  So now, Raku has 2 fiancés and a girl of his dreams, all of whom have keys and similar experiences possibly with him.  Who is the real one and what was the promise?

I tried…I really tried, but after 16 episodes I just can’t do it anymore.  This show is annoying and with no end in sight, painful to continue watching.  It represents so much of what I hate in current trends in anime.  The only thing its missing are some half naked loli characters.  This series really should have just ended at 13 episodes and been done with it, but it doesn’t even look like it will end with 26 episodes and I don’t have the stomach to keep going.  Perhaps when it is finally done I will watch the last few episodes and find out what the secret was, what’s in the locket and who he ends up with (if that even pans out to anything).  Otherwise, continuing to watch this series, let along picking up the manga, seems to be a waste of my time.

If you like harem romance series for teenage boys, this is perfect for you.  It’s currently airing on Crunchyroll so eat it out to your hearts’ content.  I, on the other hand, am putting it to bed.

Astro

Astro is a 1-shot space manga by Kuji Shinnosuke.  It was published in 2013 in Japan.

Set a bit ahead in the future, a 3 man team of astronauts return to the Moon following a disaster 5 years earlier.  Their mission is to shut down the energy for a solar power plant that was set to fuel a forthcoming colony.  The plant was damaged and is preventing further development due to its uncontrolled electrical output.  The team has two goals; the first being to cut the power to the station allowing it to be repaired and restored, the other is to reinstate the drive for space exploration.  After the accident 5 years earlier, in which a small meteor shower caused an explosion, killing that team of astronauts, public opinion against the dangers of space exploration has been mounting.  One of the members of the new team is the daughter of an astronaut who was killed in the accident.  She is driven to continue the work of everyone before her, restore faith in that work and to say farewell to her father.

This came as a random online recommendation and I don't see why it was recommended.  It wasn't that good.  In fact, it was bad.  The technical designs were well done but the character flair was annoying and unneeded.  What is with this current trend of having characters with shit on their faces?  Like random pieces of tape and other things?  The characters were a bit played out too when it came to their personality.  I understand you only have so much time to build the story and the characters with 40 or so odd pages.  But 2 out of the 3 members of the main team of astronauts were incredibly 1-dimensional and seemed to be more suited for Naruto or some other shonen action series than anything else.  The 3rd member of the team and their commanding officer were, on the other hand, believable and decently handled as was the background story and everything besides the actual part dealing with the two shitty characters accomplishing the mission.  But, it wasn't as bad as a I make it out to be.  The art was good and part of the story was good.  I just wish it would have been better, it could have been better.  There was a follow-up 1-shot called Moon Rabbit that has the main characters fighting against terrorists trying to stop Lunar colonization.  I'm not expecting much out of it but will read that one too...stay tuned for the review of that one.

This will never see the light of day commercially in North America, or possibly anywhere else.  So if you want to read it you will have to do it in Japanese or scanlation.

Mokuyobi Post - Kabuto

Kabuto is a fantasy action OAV related to a TV series and manga known as Karasu Tengu Kabuto.  This OAV was originally released in 1992 in Japan.

Its been sooo long that I watched this one and I have no desire to watch it again.  The story deals with a variant of fuedal Japan/China.  Kabuto is a member of a small group of legendary warriors.  he is on a mission to rescue a kidnapped princess from an evil sorceress.  On the way to rescuing her he has to battle all means of demons and mechanized terrors, using his mystical fighting abilities to defeat them.

So this OAV is kind of confusing and finding out that its based off of a long running series makes sense that I was confused.  Shit was going on and I had no idea why.  Knowing that it is part of this long running series makes it a little less annoying, but I don't believe the TV series or the manga are commercially available in North America.  If you are a fan of Ninja Scroll this one will fit right in with your tastes.  It features super badass heroes killing the shit out of over sexed demonic bad guys.  Lots of death and dismemberment.  Even if you wanted to find it though, this one may be pretty hard to track down.  It was under the radar in the early 90's when it came out and I don't think it was ever released on DVD.

Kawai Complex Guide is Maison Ikkoku for a new generation

The new comedic romance series, The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior (Bokura wa Minna Kawai so), is what you get if Maison Ikkoku would have been created now.

Maison Ikkoku, my favorite series from Rumiko Takahashi, is the endearing and odd ball story of helpless college student Godai Yusaku as he tries to woo the widowed manager of the apartment complex he lives in.  Standing in his way to marital bliss with Kyoko Otonashi is; their own hang ups, misconceptions and the meddling of the other tenants.

Kawai Complex Guide is about high school student Usa Kazunari and his desire to date his sempai and fellow resident of the Kawai Dormitory, Ritsu Kawai.  Yet, their own hang ups and miscommunications along with the meddling and teasing of the other residents cause friction and dysfunction in those attempts.

Just off the bat, both seem similar, yet as I delve into a comparison of the side characters we will see there is even more comparison between these two series.  The comparison will also show us how anime in general has shifted in terms of character and story types from the early 80's to the early teens and how the rise in otaku-hood has prodded that shift.

Male Lead -

Godai Yusaku(MI):  Godai is irresponsible, easily persuaded and generally hopeless.  He came to Tokyo and the Ikkoku-kan to enter college, but has been unable to pass the entrance exams.  After continuous harassment he decides to abandon his plans and move back home.  He is stopped short at the door with the arrival of the dorms new manager, the beautiful and composed Kyoko Otonashi.  Instantly falling in love, he decides to stay and uses her as an excuse to pass his exams, then to graduate college then to land a good job, all to be the man he thinks she deserves so he can marry her.

Usa Kazunari(KCG): Usa, first year high school student, has convinced his parents to let him move out of his house, due to difficulty dealing with his family.  Usa is an average student but his difficult home situation proved to be difficult on his abilities to study and live a happy existence.  On the first day at school he falls in love with a quiet bookworm upper classman, Ritsu Kawai, while in the library.  Unknown to him, this brand new crush is also a resident at the dorm he will be staying at from now on.  While he feels fortunate to have this amazing opportunity to become closer with her, the dorms other residents are eccentric and meddle in his attempts to woo Ritsu.

Female Lead -

Kyoko Otonashi(MI): Following the sudden death of her older husband, Kyoko wants to continue being a part of her in-laws family and offers to manage their rental property, Ikkoku-kan.  She is in for more than she bargained for when she discovers the complex is filled with weirdo's who love nothing more than causing trouble and getting drunk all the time.  Through most of the series she fights with the feelings she retains for her late husband/first love.  Her feelings for Godai are mostly hidden and her understanding of his feelings towards her are semi-mysterious.  She has a kind and patient demeanor but loses her patience with Godai from time to time as he puts himself into foolish situations.

Ritsu Kawai(KCG): She is a second year high school student, who apparently is well studied and spends much of her time absorbed in literature.  She has decided to live in her families’ dorm while attending high school.  Due to her passion for living in fictional worlds she seems to be mostly oblivious to the real world around her.  It is unknown if she understands Usa's desires and intentions, but his constant attempts to get closer to her tend to produce undesired reactions.

Crazy Male Tenants -

Yotsuya(MI): The mysterious and conniving Yotsuya is one of Godai's biggest hurdles.  The cunning and prominent instigator, Yotsuya craftily sets Godai up for embarrassment and failure at every turn.  Yotsuya remains a mystery to everyone around him, with an unknown past, unknown present and unknown future.  They can only guess at his intentions and machinations, mostly with perverted tendencies.

Kentaro Ichinose(MI): Grade school aged son of Hanae Ichinose, Kentaro is essentially the only voice of reason between all of the side characters.  He likes Kyoko due to her being the only rational adult in the building but hates Godai's spineless personality.  Over the course of the series he warms up to the hapless college student who starts to become more dependable.

Shirosaki(KCG): This somewhat dimwitted man is well known for his masochistic desires.  But he appears to be no more than a free loader and a loafer.  Easy going, good natured, but severely perverted, he tends to get in trouble with the other residents and the law for nothing more than his appearance and demeanor.

Crazy Female Tenants -

Akemi Roppongi(MI): Akemi is the openly sexual drunken bar hostess who joins in tormenting Godai for nothing more than passing the time.  While somewhat brainless and carefree with her body, she seems to be the most mature out of Godai's tormentor.

Hanae Ichinose(MI): Mrs. Ichinose is the middle aged, alcoholic stay at home mom who's  booming and grating voice is just one of Godai's problems.  One of the main instigators to torment the troubled man, she pushes everyone to drink with reckless abandon and leads in the entertainment at their pop-up parties.  While one of the leaders in torment, she also helps from time to time to make things better between Godai and Kyoko.

Mayumi Nishikino(KCG): Mayumi is a busty and sexual woman who hates her life as an office worker and has horrible luck with relationships with men, frequently being cheated on.  A heavy and frequent drinker, she uses her sexuality to embarrass Usa.  She has no interest in him beyond entertaining herself and somewhat supports him getting together with Ritsu.

Sayaka Watanabe(KCG): A sweet looking college student, Sayaka uses her appearance to manipulate men and women around her for her own entertainment and personal gain.  She frequently joins in with the others for group time torments of Usa, but also works on her own to plant misinformation and half truths in his mind to see what he will do.  Not as big of an alcoholic as Mayumi, but definitely tries to drink her problems away.

Sumiko(KCG): Sumiko is the manager of the dorm as well as Ritsu's aunt.  Warm and maternal in appearance, she has a sadistic side when crossed or annoyed.  She greatly welcomes Usa into the fold, playfully participates in his torture but tries to subtly help him in his goal to date her niece.

Comparison:  There are some similarities between the lead characters, but those traits are more in line with typical traits found in romance series, not specific to the characters unique personas.  The real meat of the comparison is in the peripheral characters.

Shirosaki is the blissfully perverted version of Yotsuya.  Where Yotsuya was crafty, manipulative and mysterious; Shirosaki is aloof, blatant and secretive.  Shirosaki is not as obvious with his attacks on Usa as Yotsuya was with Godai.  Both characters represent a male faction in the building which the main character dreads for uncomfortable reasons.  Yotsuya represented the dirty or lecher of a man, the perverted salaryman.  Shirosaki represents the fetishist NEET of today’s world.

Akemi and Mayumi are pretty similar in their overt sexuality and general disgust with their male leads personality and apprehension.  While Akemi has a better disposition on her life both women have no real goal or drive beyond happiness.

Mrs. Ichinose and Kyoko both have similar personality traits with Sumiko.  Aside from being the property managers, Kyoko and Sumiko both have generaly easy going and patient personalities that can be pushed to the edge when provoked, causing some divine retribution.  Mrs. Ichinose yearns for Godai to be successful with Kyoko the same way Sumiko wants to see Usa succeed with Ritsu.

Sayaka is more a composite of Mrs. Ichinose, Yotsuya and Akemi.  She is manipulative, brash, jealous and conniving in all the ways those three thorns in Godai's side were.  Out of all of Usa's antagonists she is perhaps the most dangerous one due to her manipulative personality.

Both shows in general are about a male character that pines for a female character that he is fatefully close to but has issues trying to figure out that females’ feelings and ideas.  The males’ problems are compounded by the cast of lunatic tenants who go out of their way to make the male leads pursuits both stressful and problematic.  Supporting the pursuit and threatening it as well.  By trying to completely expose the males leads intentions and feelings and fill his head with all manner of misinformation and misdirection.  Both leads are conflicted and limited in their own feelings towards each other and have a hard time expressing themselves.

Kawai Complex Guide is a product of the current trends and stereotypes in the manga and anime world.  Just as Maison Ikkoku was a snapshot of trends and stereotypes in its time.  In Maison Ikkoku we had the lecherous businessman, the brash alcoholic stay at home mom and the single head-strong woman who was proving her independence to the world.  In Kawai Complex Guide we have the unskilled and unemployed fetishist, the lost working woman who desires nothing more than a carefree marriage and a college woman using her looks to fulfill her earthly desires.  Not that all of these personality types are unique to their time frame, but each was more prominent in their era.  NEET's and girls who run through paycheck boyfriends are a huge fad in Japan these days.  While women were fighting for their independence quite strongly in the 70's and 80's; feminism seems to have taken a bit of a backseat these days when it comes to concerns over financial security and an easier future.  These are not 100% true trends, just observations I have made from what I understand and know about Japan both past and present.  You can take these observations and comparisons as you will; but thinking about Kawai Complex Guide as a modern spin on Maison Ikkoku makes me enjoy it even more than I would otherwise.  I can't wait to see how this series fleshes out and if these comparisons remain true throughout its course.  I do not see any sort of character lifespan completion like we saw with Maison Ikkoku, so I don't expect a peek at any offspring of Usa and Ritsu.
